Capital of Italy and Latium, the city lies 20 m. above sea level on the banks of the Tiber, in the Campagna di Roma. (tradition dates it to 753) near the Isola Tiberina, perhaps on the Palatine Hill, it was at first a monarchy until Tarquinius Superbus, the last king, was expelled and it became a Republic (509 BC.). In the fourth and third centuries BC. it went to war with its neighbours (Latins, Etruscans, Aequi, Volsci, Sabini, Samnites, Umbrians, etc.) for supremacy over the area and the whole of central-southern Italy, until in 264 BC. it gained control of the peninsula.

The one on the left of Michelangelo's steps as you come from Via del Teatro Marcello is the New Palace which houses one of Europe's most important collections of sculpture. It was designed by Michelangelo and became the world's first public museum in 1734 on the wishes of Pope Clement XII.

 

In the Philosophers' Atrium there are Roman copies of portraits of Greek figures. The other two rooms contain Roman busts and other famous statues including the equestrian portrait of Marcus Aurelius.

 

The other palace, the 'Conservatori', houses important paintings such as Caravaggio's "St John the Baptist" and works by Titian, Veronese, Rubens and Tintoretto.
