Capital of Italy and Latium, the city lies 20 m. above sea level on the banks of the Tiber, in the Campagna di Roma. This is the most highly populated and largest city in Italy (municipality covering 1,507.6 sq/km.), an historical and cultural centre of extraordinary importance, the capital of the Roman Catholic Church.

Founded by the Latin peoples around the eighth century BC. (tradition dates it to 753) near the Isola Tiberina, perhaps on the Palatine Hill, it was at first a monarchy until Tarquinius Superbus, the last king, was expelled and it became a Republic (509 BC.). Trevi Fountain in Rome Italy

(Fontana di Trevi) The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome's best-loved sights - an over the top, Baroque extravaganza of ancient sea gods and gushing water out of all proportion to the tiny piazza, at the meeting point of tre vie (three streets). It marks the site of one of Rome's earliest fountains, and was constructed in 1732-62 as mostra (show), following the ancient Roman custom of decorating the spot where water emerged with a great fountain.

Nicola Salvi, using a wall of Palazzo Poli as a backdrop, designed the fountain. Entire houses had to be torn down to make room for the monumental construction, which followed the popular marine mythology of the age: a massive figure of Neptune (framed by a triumphal arch) riding a sea-shell drawn by conch blowing tritons and seahorses sp ...
