San Pietro in Vaticano in Rome Italy
At Florence you think; at Venice you love; at Naples you look; at Rome you pray.' Nowhere is this Old Italian proverb more appropriate than in St Peter's, the world's most important church and the spiritual capital of Roman Catholicism.
Constantine around AD 326 on the site where St Peter was buried following his crucifixion in AD 64 built the first St Peter's. In the 16th century, Bramante was commissioned to design a completely new basilica.
Its construction took over a 100 years, with most of the great architects of the day playing a part; Michelangelo designed the lofty dome with help from Fontana and Porta, Carlo Maderno built the façade and Bernini constructed twin towers to frame the entrance (later torn down when one tower was found to be causing the basilica to crumble)
The overwhelming size and decorative splendour of the breath-taking interior is hard to comprehend, designed for grand papal processions and pilgrimage-sized congregations. Look closely and you will see the lengths of other basilicas marked along the floor of the nave - all much shorter than St Peter's! Bernini's massive gilded bronze baldcchino, or altar canopy (under which only the Pope can celebrate Mass) rises six stories over the crypt. A central yellow window masterfully illuminates his Throne of St Peter in Glory in the apse, portraying the Dove Of Peace amid rays of sunlight, clouds and flights of angels. Other Noteworthy treasures include numerous elaborate tombs, a 13th century bronze statue of St Peter whose foot has been worn away by the touch of pilgrims, and Michelangelo's moving Pieta, completed when he was just 25 years old and protected by glass since it was damaged in 1972.
